(1)-(2) I would love the opportunity to establish a ministerial office in a regional centre. The former Minister for Mines did that in Kalgoorlie. At this stage, the Government has not made a decision to establish ministerial offices in regional Western Australia. This Government’s preoccupation has been finding ways to cut government expenditure, including expenditure on ministers and their support services. It has reduced the Cabinet from 17 to 14 ministers. Hon Norman Moore: It is beginning to show. Hon TOM STEPHENS: It is hard going; no-one on this side denies that. It has been difficult for all of us. Several members interjected. Hon TOM STEPHENS: My letterhead looks as though it is covered in fly dirt; there are words all over it. Ministers have heavy workloads, but we are focused on trying to rein in expenditure. Hon Norman Moore: Are you establishing an office in Carnarvon? Hon TOM STEPHENS: I do not expect to have a ministerial office in Carnarvon. I am about to lodge a formal application to the Premier to transfer my parliamentary office - Hon Peter Foss: You cannot do that. Hon TOM STEPHENS: I will apply, but I do not know how the Premier will respond. Hon Peter Foss: You might be luckier than I was. Hon TOM STEPHENS: I will apply anyway. It would not be within my responsibility as a minister; it would be in my capacity as a local member of Parliament. It is simply to spread government members’ offices around the Mining and Pastoral Region in a way that allows people from the top of the region to the bottom to access government MPs. That is where we are up to at the moment. I hope that at some stage we can improve on the presence of ministerial offices in regional Western Australia.
