(1) The $600,000 provided sponsorship for registered nurses to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Nurse Practitioner at Curtin University. The $600,000 was for the development and delivery of an education program for nurse practitioners in Western Australia for a period of three years and for twenty students each year to undertake the course. (2) Undergraduate nursing students are not eligible to undertake nurse practitioner courses. (3) There are currently five registered nurse practitioners working in regional areas and six registered nurse practitioners working in the metropolitan area. Of the 58 sponsored registered nurses undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Nurse Practitioner at Curtin University of Technology, 25 have completed their studies; 24 in the metropolitan area and 1 in regional. At this time, all 25 sponsored nurses have registered with the Nurses Board of Western Australia. The registered nurse practitioners are now eligible for employment. The Area Health Services are currently preparing a submission for designation and employment of these nurses as nurse practitioners, as per the Poisons Regulations (1965). It is expected that a further 10 applications for designation and employment of nurse practitioners will be processed in the next 6 months. (4) Not Applicable. This information is not available as undergraduate nursing students are not eligible to undertake the nurse practitioner course.
