IRON ORE
EXPORT RESTRICTIONS — PREMIER'S COMMENTS
266. Mr W.J. JOHNSTON to the
Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
(1) How does
the minister plan on implementing the Premier's new policy to restrict
the export of iron ore resources and reduce the amount of iron ore that is
available for sale?
(2) What
discussions did the minister hold with the Premier prior to his announcement on
10 April of this new policy?

I thank the member for Cannington for the question. It is
outside my portfolio. Just for interest, the Minister for Mines and Petroleum
is responsible for ensuring that the mining industry is safe for all the people
who work in it, ensuring that all the operations look after the environment and
ensuring that the mineral tenements are properly managed. Some private mining
companies are policed under the Mining Act 1978 and some are policed under
state agreement acts, which come under the Premier, who is also the Minister
for State Development. As it turns out, not that I guessed the member might ask
this question, one of the clauses in the Iron Ore (Hamersley Range) Agreement
Act 1963, under the heading ''Shipment of and price for ore'',
states —
 ship from the Company's
wharf all iron ore mined from the mineral lease and sold and use its best
endeavours to obtain therefor the best price possible having regard to market
conditions from time to time prevailing PROVIDED THAT this paragraph
I understand that the Minister for
State Development, to whom the member should have perhaps directed his
question, might be able to give a more detailed answer.
