DANGEROUS
SEX OFFENDERS — RELEASE FROM PRISON
229. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the
Minister for Police:
I ask a supplementary question. Why did the minister's
government allow TJD to be released into the community without placing him on
the register?

AnswerView source ↗

To be clear, this offender was released into the community by
the court, and I believe those matters were canvassed —
Mrs M.H. Roberts :
A couple of weeks ago.
The SPEAKER :
Member, I do not want any more interjections.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : —
and discussed in great detail.
Mr F.M. Logan interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Cockburn, I call you to order for the first time.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : I
believe that that issue was canvassed and discussed at great length in this
chamber. I want to be really clear that the government has said that we do not
agree with the release of this offender into the community, but it is not up to
us.
Point of Order
Mrs
M.H. ROBERTS : This was a supplementary question. They are supposed
to be brief questions and brief answers. I briefly want to know why the
government has not placed him on the register.
The
SPEAKER : That is the question, minister. Can you answer the
question?
Questions without Notice Resumed
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : I
will just go back to the question that I heard. I was asked why the government
agreed to the release of this offender. The courts released the offender.
Mr J.R. Quigley :
Why don't you answer the question?
The SPEAKER :
Member for Butler, I call you to order for the first time. Minister, we are
onto the supplementary question, so just answer the supplementary, please.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY :
To explain the process, when the courts release an offender back into the
community with a supervision order, a process needs to be followed before their
name is published on the website. We are going through that process. I expect
that TJD's name will be on the website in the very near future. The
Commissioner of Police cannot —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Warnbro, I call you to order for the third time. Member for Butler,
you have been called on two occasions, not one.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY :
The police commissioner cannot predict the outcome of the court process. The
process to have an offender published on the community program cannot occur
until the court has made that decision. That process is in train.
Ms M.M. Quirk interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the second time. Minister, wind
this up, please.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY :
The process is in train and I expect that his name will be published on the
community protection website in the very near future.
