What action has the minister taken to deliver on the Government’s commitment to develop the Western Australian contemporary music industry? Ms McHALE

I thank the member for her question. Last Sunday I announced the establishment of a contemporary music task force, which will drive our $5 million contemporary music strategy. The first $1.25 million of this funding is included in the 2001-02 budget delivered by the Treasurer last Thursday. The task force will be chaired by Bob Gordon, a former editor of Xpress, and will be responsible for developing the policy for contemporary music. Task force members will represent the music industry, musicians, commercial radio and indigenous music interests. The task force will consider how best to implement the following objectives: developing and promoting talented musicians and bands in our State; reviewing the current state of the industry and its potential for economic growth; providing marketing opportunities for original bands; supporting a web site to market and sell Western Australian contemporary music to the world; providing safe opportunities for young people to see original bands through an all-ages program; providing opportunities for original bands to tour regionally, interstate and internationally; and developing the skills of contemporary musicians in performance production and business. This is one of the largest commitments in the arts budget. It highlights our commitment, among other things, broadly to the arts and to the support of young people, all art form areas and, specifically, contemporary music.
