SERIAL CHILD SEX OFFENDER
— SUPERVISION ORDER
565. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to my question without
notice 546 asked yesterday regarding the comparative full financial costs of monitoring
the dangerous serial child sex offender MGD in the community versus the
alternative of his continued detention within a correctional facility.
(1) What was the
full financial cost to the Western Australian public of MGD's custodial
sentence for each of the 2017–18 and 2018–19 financial years?
(2) Prior to MGD's
release, what was the anticipated full cost for the 2019–20 financial
year of MGD's continued detention?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following information has been provided by the
Minister for Corrective Services.
(1)–(2) Although
the department does not keep figures on costs relating to specific individuals,
the average cost of keeping an individual incarcerated for each financial year
in question is as follows—2017–18, $109 135 or $299 per day;
2018–19, $104 025 or $285 per day; and 2019–20, $109 865 or
