Will the minister report on the latest anti-south west rail position from the Opposition? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for his steadfast support for a first-class, fast and direct rail service to the people of the south west metropolitan area. Last night another opposition member came out of the closet. I listened to the enlightened contribution by Hon Peter Foss in the Legislative Council as he tried to delay the rail Bill. Hon Peter Foss said that the people of Mandurah do not want to travel to Perth by train. It appears that he is another fully paid-up member of the let-them-use-buses brigade. He made some more interesting comments, including a mea culpa. He said that the former Government had made a mistake, which was to agree to have the proposed railway run from Rockingham to Mandurah. Unfortunately, the member for Dawesville has been taken away on urgent parliamentary business and is not here to defend the interests of the people of Dawesville. To clarify this situation, I will list the infamous gang of backsliders, which now includes Hon Peter Foss and the member for Warren-Blackwood, who was also a minister in the former Government and who categorically said in Parliament that this project was well and truly ahead of its time. The Leader of the National Party, who has replied definitively in this place that the - Dr G.I. Gallop interjected. Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The National Party has also opposed this project. The opposition spokesperson has said that this is a luxury that we simply cannot afford. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas: Don’t misquote me. Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: The federal Liberals said that we should not spend money on railways because people do not use public transport. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN: Now we are beginning to understand why, during its eight years in office, the former government did not build one centimetre of railway. The former Government had no appetite or commitment to the project.
