Opposition questions the Premier about whether the Government Media Office is producing materials specifically for local Labor members, following an increase in funding for strategic communications and community liaison. The Premier avoids a direct 'yes' or 'no', stating the office provides information to all members.

I refer the Premier to his admission during the Estimates Committee on 20 May that his Government is pumping an additional $860 000 a year into the Government Media Office in part to establish a strategic communications unit and a community liaison unit. Do either of those units prepare any material for local Labor members for use specifically in their electorates? Dr G.I. GALLOP

I pointed out in the Estimates Committee that there were two aspects of the Government Media Office that had changed. Firstly, that we now conduct regular regional cabinet meetings and, as a result, we must prepare and have proper liaison with the community. Secondly, and importantly, we now have a more strategic approach to communication. We have seen one example of that already with the Minister for Health’s campaign to attract more nurses to the health system. As I said in the Estimates Committee, the individual members of the Parliament need to know what the Government is doing so that they can communicate that message to their electorates. I am sure that they get assistance to do that from the ministers individually and from the Government Media Office so that the facts of the case are known to them and members then can communicate that information to their electorate.
