SCHOOL OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
639. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
Minister for Education:
I refer to the budget cuts to the School of Instrumental
Music program, and to one student who received a provisional letter of
acceptance for a placement through SIM at Canning Vale College but was then
told that the placement no longer existed because of changes to funding within
the department.
(1) How many
full-time equivalent positions will be cut next year from the School of
Instrumental Music program?
(2) In early
July 2013, did Canning Vale College expect to be able to accept out-of-area
placements to specialist music students?
(3) Do the
cuts to the SIM program mean schools are taking fewer out-of-zone placements
than has been the case in previous years?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
I wish to state that the premise of these questions is
incorrect. This matter is not budget related but is related to local-intake
boundaries.
(1) The total
budget reduction for SIM was approximately six per cent, and this reflects a
reduction of eight FTEs. SIM is not funded or staffed in the same way as other
schools, as it is a statewide service.
(2) Canning
Vale College followed normal procedures in considering applications for
enrolment into the music specialist program from students living outside of the
local-intake area. Parents were advised that confirmation of a place in the
program was conditional on the college being able to accommodate all students
from the local-intake area.
(3) No. This
is a local-intake area issue, and a reduction in FTE does not affect the School
of Instrumental Music's ability to provide teachers to support this
program.
