(2) The Department has in place an endorsed reconciliation policy since March 1999. The policy is supported by resources for Zone Offices and central office to undertake reconciliation activities. During Reconciliation Week, additional funding is made available for Departmental staff to undertake a reconciliation activity organised by themselves or work in partnership with local reconciliation groups. The Family Information Records Bureau (FIRB) has been in place since July 1998 as a direct response to the 'Bringing Them Home' report. FIRB is staffed predominantly by Aboriginal people to enable access to personal and family information from Native Welfare and departmental files. The provision of these historical records is done in a culturally sensitive manner to ensure that applicants needs are met. In addition, the Department has in place an Aboriginal Strategy and Policy section which provides an Aboriginal perspective in the development of programs, services and policies which ensures access and equity for Aboriginal people in the delivery of services. The Director Aboriginal Strategy and Policy is a member of corporate executive.
