I thank the member for Joondalup for
the question. The government is pleased that cycling in Western Australia has
been increasing steadily over the last few years. The Premier and I are
committed to ensuring more people are cycling and that their journey is safe
and enjoyable in and around our city. The Premier has a meeting scheduled with
the cycling community in March. I welcome all members in this place to join me
regularly, whether it be on a weekend, or a Tuesday and Thursday at 5.30, for a
ride around the city. With cycling on the increase, it is even more important
that all road users travel appropriately to the conditions, share our roads
safely and adhere to the road rules.
The government has allocated a record
$101.6 million to cycling infrastructure since coming to government. It has
allocated $56.7 million to 18 principal shared path projects, including the
Kwinana Freeway, the Perth to Midland rail line and the Perth bicycle network
grants to local government.
Several members interjected.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : I will repeat that for the member for Albany: and regional
bicycle network grants to local government.
The government has doubled its
funding to local government networks. The numbers prove that the government is
committed to getting more people on cycle paths. It is committed to providing
cyclists with a safe journey. I look forward to updating members. As I said,
additional projects are being undertaken such as the Gateway WA project in
between the member for Belmont's and the member for Forrestfield's
electorates. There is an additional 21 kilometres of cycle paths just in that
area alone. With every major infrastructure project we do, we will add cycle
paths. I look forward to updating this house as we progress.
