SCHOOL VIOLENCE —
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING CENTRES
26. Hon DONNA FARAGHER to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I refer to the minister's
answer to question without notice 4 asked yesterday regarding the three
alternative learning centres trialled in 2019.
(1) Can the
minister advise whether the 20 students who did not return to either their
original school, a new school or another education setting completed the
program; and, if not, how many did not complete the program?
(2) Can the minister provide a breakdown
of how many of these students —
(a) are engaged in an approved
alternative option to full-time schooling;
(b) an approved community-based
course;
(c) other alternative pathways not
listed in (a) or (b), and please specify; and
(d) are no longer
attending school, and please specify whether any were due to complete their
compulsory education period in 2019?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
The answer to question without
notice 4 asked yesterday was current as at the end of the 2019 school year. At
that time, students who had not transitioned back to school or another
education setting remained engaged with an alternative learning service or were
receiving other support from the Department of Education through statewide services and/or regional offices to engage with an
education program. The following data provides details of what is
happening with those remaining 20 students now that the 2020 school year has
commenced and as at 12 February 2020.
(1) Fourteen of the 20 students are
continuing their education in an ALS program.
(2) Of the six who have left —
(a) One student has transitioned to the School of
Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement.
(b)–(c) Nil.
(d) Four students
have not attended school since the start of the 2020 school year. All four
remain enrolled in a school and department
support services are working to connect them and their families with an
appropriate education option. The remaining student has returned to their
original school.
