756. Dr EDWARDS to the Minister for Forest Products:
(1) Is the Government currently negotiating with any timber mills to exit from the industry?
(2) If so, have any timber mills agreed to exit from the industry?
(3) If so -
(a) which timber mills;
(b) what is the value of the compensation package each mill will receive;
(c) what is the volume of each mill's log supply contract;
(d) when will each mill cease business; and
(e) how many employees does each mill employ?
(4) Has the Government requested, or does the Government plan to request, the renegotiation of any log supply contracts?
(5) If so -
(a) why has this request been made and what conditions will be applied to the new contracts;
(b) what aspects of the log contracts are being renegotiated;
(c) has any business agreed to enter into negotiations;
(d) if so, what are the names of the businesses; and
(e) what will be the consequences for timber mills that choose not to renegotiate timber supply contracts;
(6) How many hectares of forest will be protected as a result of these mills exiting from the industry?
(7) What is the Government
's definition of `value adding'?
(8) How much does the Department of Conservation and Land Management receive for blue gum chip logs and blue gum saw logs?
