AVIATION INDUSTRY — DEREGULATION
I refer to the enormous difficulties facing the aviation industry worldwide. (1) Does the Premier accept that now is not the right time to deregulate Western Australian intrastate aviation services? (2) Will he put an immediate end to the uncertainty being caused to businesses in my electorate and make it clear that the aviation routes currently under regulation will remain protected? Mr C.J. BARNETT

(1)-(2) A report has been received by the Minister for Transport that refers to deregulation of aviation. I am very conscious of successive governments’ efforts to maintain reliable air services to many centres and regions throughout the state, so I assure the member that we will not simply tear up the book and deregulate the industry. However, we will look at maintaining good and reliable services and at the viability of the operators in that area. Every government has agonised over and dealt with this issue because we hear conflicting points of view from various airline operators about what is best. However, there is no doubt that, in an area as large as Western Australia with such massive distances between small population areas, often a degree of subsidy and regulation is necessary to maintain air services. I assure the member that there will be no pre-emptive move to deregulate air services in this state.
