Coded cause of death data is presently only available up to the end of 2004. The data for 2004 is regarded by the ABS as preliminary as a number of deaths in 2004 were not registered until 2005 due to delays from coronial inquests. When this data becomes available this may require revision by the ABS of the 2004 data.

Suspected narcotic (opioid) deaths are based on information obtained by the WA Police at the initial stage of investigation of a sudden or unexplained death where heroin or other opioid narcotics are believed to be involved. This is a preliminary cause subject to confirmation following consideration by formal coronial inquiry or an inquest.
