On behalf of the responsible parliamentary secretary, I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question, the answer to which has been provided by the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure in the following terms - (1) This is not correct. While all “U” rails are normally utilised, the internal storage space provided for bicycles within the Fremantle Station bike barn building still has excessive capacity. As at 11.35 am today - this is dated 27 September, which is today - it was estimated that only 50 per cent or the available space was being utilised. (2) Yes. Cyclists are ignoring the warnings issued by the Public Transport Authority and are securing bicycles to locations that impede passenger egress, hence presenting a safety hazard. Cyclists are initially given a warning; however, if they repeat the offence, they are issued with an infringement notice. There is no need for them to persist with this practice given the availability of storage space that exists at the station. (3) The Public Transport Authority is committed to providing bicycle storage facilities at stations to meet demand, and as encouragement for patrons to cycle rather than drive to stations. Bicycle storage facilities are audited to determine the amount of usage, and if there is sufficient demand, additional facilities will be installed.
