With regard to the proposed sea-swap program encouraged by the Western Australian Government, I ask -
(1) Can the Premier show where in the Government’s draft sustainability strategy there are any recommendations relating to hosting an expanded United States military presence?
(2) Does the Premier believe encouraging an expanded US military presence in Western Australia is in alignment with the principles of ecologically sustainable development?
(3) If yes to (2), can the Premier explain why he believes this?

(2)-(3) Yes. The Government is committed to ensuring an ongoing Australian defence presence in Western Australia. Visits by United States military forces are at the discretion of the Commonwealth Government. The economic activity generated by these visits contributes to growth for the State. Sustainability is both a global and local process. As a part of the global economy, Western Australia can make a contribution to global security and stability by maintaining an Australian military presence in the State and by hosting visits from the military forces of the United States and other nations from time to time.
