GENERAL GOVERNMENT FINANCES — PUBLIC SECTOR WAGES
Some notice of this question has been given. The monthly report of general government finances for the month ending May 2009 has revealed that public sector wages have blown out by $783 million, or 12.6 per cent, over the 11 months to May 2009. Given that the Treasurer’s cap on public sector service staffing expired on 30 June 2009, and given that the government’s wages policy, announced on 31 March 2009, has so far proved to be ineffective — (1) Does the Treasurer stand by his expense growth estimate in the budget of 6.6 per cent for the 2009-10 financial year? (2) What, if any, is the new public service staffing cap for 2009-10? Hon HELEN MORTON
