I refer the minister to his
response to question without notice 1245, asked on Tuesday, 17 October.
(1) During the
minister's August 2023 meeting with the Aboriginal Advisory Council of Western
Australia and his two meetings with an AACWA
subcommittee, did the committee or subcommittee express support for the
establishment and retention of unit 18 at Casuarina Prison.
(2) If no, did
the committee or subcommittee express any concerns about the establishment and
retention of unit 18 at Casuarina Prison; and, if yes; what were their

some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me
by the Minister for Corrective Services.
(1)–(2) The
minister provides regular updates to Aboriginal stakeholders on youth justice
matters, including the current requirement for unit 18 to accommodate the state's
most complex, disruptive and often violent offenders. Unit 18 is currently the
only facility capable of safely and securely accommodating this cohort of young
offenders. The minister will continue to update Aboriginal stakeholders on
these matters.
