Boxed meat industry
42. Hon Sophia Moermond to the Minister for Agriculture and Food :
I refer to the
Western Australian boxed meat industry. I listened with great interest to what
Hon Darren West said in his member's statement last night.
(1) How is the WA government assisting the growth
of the boxed meat industry in this state?
(2) How is the government supporting local abattoirs
to sustain the meat-processing sector?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The Cook Labor government is working across
the entire red meat supply chain, including through on-farm research and
development and by providing advice and support on transport, processing,
market access and export opportunities. This includes ongoing collaboration
with producer groups, processor bodies, state and national industry groups and
our network of Invest and Trade offices in key markets.
(2) The Cook Labor government supports local abattoirs
through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and the
Western Australian Meat Industry Authority by providing advice and support;
value add investment grants, including to support investment in cold storage; the
small-scale abattoir voucher program; and loans for cooperatives.
