INDIAN OCEAN CLIMATE INITIATIVE
I refer to the funding of the Indian Ocean Climate Initiative and the cessation of its funding in December 2002. (1) Will the Government continue to provide funding to the IOCI in the 2002-03 budget? (2) Will the Government commit to maintaining current levels of funding to the IOCI in the 2002-03 budget? (3) Given that Western Australia now appears to be heading into an extended period of climate change, will the Government commit to increasing funding to climate research in general and to the IOCI in particular? (1) The minister has been advised by the Water and Rivers Commission that the Government will continue to fund the Indian Ocean Climate Initiative in the 2002-03 budget. (2) The level of funding for 2002-03 currently is being determined. (3) The Government is concerned over climate change and the consequences for the community, industry and the environment. Continuing funding of climate research, including the Indian Ocean Climate Initiative, is a priority.
