GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS — HEALTH CONCERNS
(1) Is the minister aware that a genetically modified corn—Monsanto’s high-lysine LY038 corn—authorised by the Australian food regulator Food Standards Australia New Zealand as being safe for consumption has been withdrawn from Europe because of safety concerns? (2) Is the minister aware that when Roundup Ready canola meal was fed to rats in Monsanto’s own study, it resulted in increased liver sizes of 16 per cent and that there have been no follow-up studies to see what the implications of this could be for human health? (3) Does the minister acknowledge that the health concerns surrounding GM crops could have the potential to adversely affect the market for these products? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) The high-lysine LY038 corn has been withdrawn from the registration process in the European Union. I understand that LY038 corn was withdrawn because it was not commercially viable and not because of safety concerns. (2) The Gene Technology Regulator and Foods Standards Australia New Zealand examined the issue of the increased liver weight of rats in considerable detail during the evaluation of Roundup Ready canola and concluded that there were no human health and safety concerns in relation to the feeding studies of rats fed on canola meal. (3) Market forces will resolve this issue.
