In relation to the Barnett Government’s sponsorship of the Hopman Cup, I ask:

(a) Hopman Cup Pty Ltd advised that three journalists from China and one from South Korea attended the 2012 Hopman Cup (XXIV). While no financial assistance was provided for these journalists as part of the Government's sponsorship of the event, Tourism Western Australia worked closely with Hopman Cup Pty Ltd to secure the involvement of China's Li Na (women's world number five and 2011 French Open Champion) in the tournament in order to generate interest from Asian media.
(b) Tourism Western Australia has not undertaken research on coverage in the Asian media for the 2012 Hyundai Hopman Cup. However, the agency is aware that China's Xinhau News has run nine online articles on XinhuaNet.com relating to this year's event. The Xinhau News Agency is the official press agency of the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the largest centre for collecting information and press conferences in the PRC.
Independent Media Impact research commissioned by Tourism Western Australia on the 2011 Hyundai Hopman Cup (XXIII) also showed that the event delivered 2,046 hours of television broadcast into China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore and Indonesia. The estimated advertising equivalent media value of this exposure for Western Australia is over $74 million.
