QuestionView source ↗
I ask this question of the Deputy Premier in his capacity as Acting Premier when he presided over the now infamous Alinta cabinet meeting. I refer to his comments in this house on Thursday, 13 October regarding opposition questions about who was and was not at that cabinet meeting. I quote the Deputy Premier - I asked my staff what it was about and was advised that the opposition appeared to be gunning for the Minister for Disability Services . . . Why did the Deputy Premier’s staff member believe that the opposition was gunning for the former Minister for Disability Services? Mr E.S. RIPPER
AnswerView source ↗
Of course, the Acting Premier’s responsibilities are assumed by the Premier once the Acting Premier ceases to be acting. That is the way in which our system works. Therefore, it is not possible to ask people who have been in an acting capacity about matters that occurred after the period in which they held that acting capacity. The fact is that I have dealt with those issues. I dealt with them in the matter of public interest debate last Thursday. They have been well and truly answered. Mr M.J. Birney : Answer the question! Mr E.S. RIPPER : I have answered the question! Read the Hansard , my friend! The Leader of the Opposition and his research team cannot read the Hansard , or cannot listen in this place, because I have answered the question. However, there are a few questions that the Leader of the Opposition has not answered. For example, the Leader of the Opposition has not yet said why a man who is facing a criminal charge is still sitting on his front bench. The Leader of the Opposition still has not explained what he will do should that man be convicted. Has the shadow cabinet discussed that matter? Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! Mr E.S. RIPPER : Leader of the Opposition, has the shadow cabinet discussed that matter? Several members interjected. Mr E.S. RIPPER : The Leader of the Opposition cannot answer that question! All he can do is um and ah as he tries to develop another question to ask me! Well, the Leader of the Opposition has some questions to answer. He also has to answer this question: will the Leader of the Opposition rule out Hon Murray Criddle ever being a member of a government that he leads, in view of the way in which he behaved with his Wesfarmers shares when he was in charge of the privatisation of Westrail? Will the Leader of the Opposition rule him out from ever being a minister, because not only did he attend a cabinet meeting on that matter, but also he was the minister charged with the privatisation, and he tried to hide his conflict of interest by disposing of the shares to his wife? I have answered all the questions on this matter. The Leader of the Opposition need only read the Hansard . There are three or four very important questions about accountability that he has not answered.
