Homelessness—St Bart's—Women's service
162. Hon Steve Martin to the Minister for
Homelessness:
I refer to St Bart's
being forced to close its women's service by 1 July due to the government
ceasing its funding.
(1) Why did the Department of Communities cease
funding St Bart's women's service?
(2) Did St Bart's propose a new site for its
women's service and request state government funding to ensure this service
would continue?
(3) How much did St Bart request and what was the
rationale for the department to decline this funding request?
(4) How many women have found alternative
accommodation since the department ceased its funding?
(5) How many women currently accommodated at St
Bart's in East Perth are waiting for new accommodation arrangements?
(6) Will the government continue to fund St Bart's
until all women have new accommodation arrangements in place?

I thank the member
for some notice of the question.
(1)–(6) St Bart's is seeking to re-develop
its facilities in East Perth, which will involve the closure of its existing
women's homelessness accommodation service by 30 June 2025. The women's service
is not included in St Bart's future development plans for the site. Once
informed of the redevelopment and the cessation of services at the site in
November 2024, the Department of Communities has been closely engaged with St Bart's
on its decision to close its current facility and an alternative accommodation
option is expected to be in place soon. Communities actively considered all
options for maintaining suitable accommodation for vulnerable women accessing
St Bart's. Every woman currently accommodated at the St Bart's facility who
would like to continue receiving services will continue to have access to safe
and suitable accommodation and access to support services. A request for tender
has recently closed. Communities will soon be in a position to announce further
information on who will take over running the vital services currently offered
by St Bart's.
