(1) Is the Premier aware of an article that appeared in The West Australian newspaper on 12 May 2000 in which the Premier is reported as saying that public sector chief executive officers that fail to deliver on spending restraint would "get the sack"?
(2) Is this what the Premier said?
(3) If not, what did the Premier say?
(4) Did the Premier make any comment about public sector chief executive officers getting the sack if they failed to deliver on spending restraint?
(5) If so, what was that comment?
(6) Was this an off the cuff comment or does the Premier intend to sack chief executive officers who fail to deliver on spending restraint?

The Minister Replied:
(1)-(7) The statement simply confirms that this government is serious about good financial management. It was a point I also raised in my post-budget briefing to CEOs.
This government acts responsibly when considering CEOs' performances. Since being elected in 1993, this government has substantially enhanced and clarified CEOs' accountabilities through the introduction of the Public Sector Management Act in 1994 which has led to clear contracts of employment and performance agreements between CEOs and government. Those agreements include financial management responsibilities.
