With regard to the Government’s commitment to an expansion of the TravelSmart program and to encourage a greater use of bicycles for commuter travel, and answers to questions without notice of Thursday, 31 May 2001, I ask - (1) What advantage does the minister see in allowing bicycles to travel in trains “in peak period in the contra direction”? (2) Does the minister accept that commuters utilising the train service and cycling are travelling to the city, not in the contra direction? (3) Does the minister accept that free-to-use cycle lockers, although welcome, do not assist cyclists who wish to use their bicycles during work hours or to complete their journey? (4) Will the minister consider the introduction of modified carriages that can accommodate bicycles, prams and wheelchairs even during peak hour and travelling in the main direction? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Many students and people who work in the outer suburbs have asked that they be allowed to travel with their bicycles on trains in the contra direction. (2) Yes. Lockers have been provided at stations for people to leave their bikes at the station. Cycleways are being constructed to encourage people to cycle to the city. (3) Yes, although they greatly encourage people to cycle to the railway station instead of driving. (4) The new rolling stock being ordered for the south west line will have greater accommodation for bicycles, prams and wheelchairs.
