MARMION MARINE PARK
862. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Minister for Environment:
I refer to the proposed Marmion
Marine Park extension.
(1) Has the proposed plan for this
extension been finalised?
(2) Has that proposed plan been
approved by the Minister for Fisheries; and, if so, when?
(3) Is it true
that the minister told industry figures earlier this year that the extension
plan would not proceed for public consultation prior to the election,
presumably to avoid any voter backlash?

(1)–(3) I
thank the Leader of the Opposition. I think the answer that everyone wants to
know is whether he supports this marine park, because he does not support the
South Coast Marine Park.
In the past eight years of this
government, we have engaged in great effort to bring on more conservation estates for Western Australia. This is an amazing
legacy for the people of Western Australia of great swathes of Western Australia
that have unique biodiversity and landscape values.
Mr R.S. Love interjected.
Mr R.R. WHITBY : Member, this
is important because this is legacy building for future generations of people
of Western Australia. We did more consultation than has ever been done before
when we delivered the South Coast Marine Park. We had members over there making
things up and trying to pull it down. Members of the opposition are still
calling into question the legitimacy of the marine parks and whether we should
have them at all. When we came out with our plan for the South Coast Marine
Park, we had support from people in all sectors who were grateful for us
listening to their concerns and responding accordingly. We are very careful and
mindful of getting the balance right. We will always pursue that.
In the case of the extension to the
Marmion Marine Park, we are not rushing it. As I have said publicly, we were
concentrating our resources on the South Coast Marine Park. We will get to the
Marmion Marine Park, but we will not rush
the process. We will take our time and get the outcome right—one that
will strike the right balance between conservation, community and native
Indigenous groups and, of course, recreational and commercial fishing. How we
deliver outcomes gets support across the community. We have that same outcome
and desire for the delivery of the Marmion Marine Park extension.
