GUILDFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL — SCHOOL CROSSING
I refer to the crossing mainly utilised by Guildford Primary School students on Great Eastern Highway between Kidman Avenue and Queens Road in South Guildford. Recently, this crossing was the scene of a road accident in which a traffic warden was injured. (1) Will the minister request that Main Roads WA make this crossing a marked pedestrian crossing in order to make it more visible to oncoming motorists; and, if not, why not? (2) Will the minister request that the 40 kilometres an hour school zone be extended to include this crossing; and, if not, why not? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Main Roads WA is aware of the accident that occurred on 21 February 2008 and is currently investigating options to improve safety at this crossing. The proposal to install a zebra crossing is not supported because this type of facility is not effective on undivided four-lane roads and the treatment is gradually being phased out on arterial roads. One of the options investigated by Main Roads is the installation of flashing wig-wag lights at the crossing. Any improvements or modifications will be undertaken in consultation with the traffic warden state management unit and will take into account factors such as sight lines, vehicle traffic patterns, pedestrian numbers and crossing times. (2) It is not practical to extend the existing school zone at Guildford Primary School. Presently, this zone finishes approximately 500 metres from the Kidman Avenue crossing. Experience has shown that the effectiveness of school zones diminishes greatly once they extend much beyond the school environs, particularly on arterial roads.
