I refer to the Premier’s announcement about the possible use of waste water for domestic and industrial purposes, including drinking water. (1) Which areas have been selected for the trials? (2) Will the residents concerned be consulted as to whether they wish to be part of the trial? (3) If so, when will they be consulted? (4) If not, why not? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question and hope he is not too surprised by the answer. (1) Trials are already in place at the Halls Head waste water treatment plant on Water Corporation land and at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation on Floreat land to determine the impact of secondary treated waste water on the ground water system. No residences have been impacted by these trials. The locations for other trials are still under consideration. A factor involved in the selection of the trial locations is to minimise the impact on residents. (2)-(3) Yes. It will be when there is more clarity on locations where trials are appropriate. (4) Not applicable.
