VICTOR URQUHART AND ROBBIE WHEELER - PLACEMENT AT HAKEA PRISON
I refer to the cosy arrangement between two recently convicted paedophiles in Hakea Prison. One of them could easily be accommodated at Casuarina Prison, which is just minutes away from Hakea. (1) Has the minister directed the Department of Corrective Services to separate convicted paedophiles and lovers Wheeler and Urquhart; and, if not, why not? (2) How does the minister explain the contradiction between her comments yesterday that Wheeler and Urquhart would be under constant surveillance with those of the Commissioner for Corrective Services last year that numerous blind spots existed at Hakea Prison? (3) Did the minister intentionally mislead the Western Australian people yesterday when she made this comment? Ms M.M. QUIRK

(1)-(3) I thank the member for his question; it is a rare event, and I am very pleased to answer the question. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Ms M.M. QUIRK : Firstly, I can tell the member for Hillarys that I am not misleading the public of Western Australia. Evidence given by the commissioner last year regarding blind spots at Hakea Prison related to the prison as a whole and not necessarily the crisis care unit. I refute that there is any arrangement, cosy or otherwise. I have directed the Department of Corrective Services that, after sentencing, the two offenders to which the member refers will be held in separate institutions. Mr R.F. Johnson : Why don’t you send one to Casuarina? The SPEAKER : Members! Mr R.F. Johnson interjected. The SPEAKER : Members!
