MERREDIN BY-ELECTION
Following the resignation yesterday of the former father of the House and member for Merredin, has the Premier turned his mind to setting a date for the Merredin by-election? Dr GALLOP

As members are aware, the former Deputy Premier and Leader of the National Party, resigned from the Parliament yesterday to contest a Senate seat in the forthcoming federal election. I am sure that all members join with me in wishing the former Deputy Premier all the best for the future, although opinions will vary on the likelihood of his success in the contest. The Government does not believe that the people of Merredin should be denied representation in this Parliament for any longer than is absolutely necessary. Accordingly, I wrote today to the Speaker requesting that he advise the Electoral Commissioner that the writ for the by-election to fill the vacancy in the Merredin electoral district be held on Saturday, 24 November. That means nominations will close on Friday, 26 October.
