QANTAS INTERNATIONAL SERVICES — PERTH–SINGAPORE
256. Mr C.D. HATTON to the Minister for
Tourism:
Can I firstly acknowledge the presence
in the gallery today of support leaders from Maida Vale Primary School in the
member for Forrestfield's electorate.
The announcement last Friday that
Qantas will resume international services between Perth and Singapore is very
welcome news for many Western Australians. Can the minister advise the house
what this means for the state's tourism industry?

Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Bassendean, I call you to order for the first time.
Ms
R. Saffioti : What did he say?
Dr
K.D. HAMES : Something totally unparliamentary that it is lucky nobody
heard.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Members!
Withdrawal of Remark
Dr
K.D. HAMES : I withdraw the comment that nobody heard, because it was
unparliamentary.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you.
Questions without Notice Resumed
Dr K.D. HAMES : The
return of Qantas to providing flights between Perth and Singapore is critically
important. Just to reiterate what that announcement was, from 26 June this
year, Qantas will reinstate —
Several members interjected.
Dr K.D. HAMES : You
don't give a rat's about tourism! You guys just don't
understand how important —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale, I call you to order for the first time. Member for
Cannington, I do not want to hear from you.
Dr K.D. HAMES :
This state is going through a particular crisis with the drop-off in the price
of iron ore, and in replacing that it is critically important that this state
creates employment —
Mr D.A. Templeman interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Mandurah, I call you to order for the first time. We have tried to
get this started for about the last two minutes.
Dr K.D. HAMES : I
am trying very hard, Mr Speaker.
It is critically important for this state to promote tourism,
and agriculture for that matter, as a means of creating alternative employment
for people, including those in our electorates and our regions, member for
Mandurah, who have been working in the mining industry and have lost their
jobs. Therefore, improving our support and focus on tourism is critically
important. We have been doing that with our funding through Tourism WA,
particularly through deals with Qantas. We have a contract worth $7.65 million
over three years with Qantas —
Mr P. Papalia interjected.
Dr K.D. HAMES :
Qantas flies on all sorts of other routes. That shows that the member for
Warnbro knows absolutely zero about tourism. I think the Leader of the
Opposition should move this member on. He knows zero about tourism in this
state. Qantas flies on other routes. The member might not have been aware of
that. We have a sponsorship deal with Qantas. Some of those funds will be
involved in marketing through Singapore.
Just last night, I attended, along with my parliamentary
secretary from the other place, an event in the Swan Valley with tourism
operators who have come from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia to look at
tourism in this state and to be involved with our suppliers to see how they can
best leverage tourists coming out of those three countries into this state.
Developing tourism is critically important, particularly with the support this
state has given to the hotel industry. We will reach our target of providing an
extra 1 900 hotel beds in this state, and we will need to work to make sure
those beds are filled with people who have come from those countries so that we
can support our tourism industry. That is critically important, and clearly the
opposition knows nothing about it.
