BUYERS — STAMP DUTY
340. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Treasurer:
I have a supplementary question. I refer to the comments just
made by the Treasurer. Can he confirm that approvals for land supply fell under
his government, in comparison with the last four years of the previous Labor
government; that land prices actually increased; and that average lot sizes
decreased, creating huge shortages in the market?

Dr M.D. NAHAN : In
the halcyon days of 2006, when there was a large growth in population,
investors were flooding into the market because they saw what Labor was doing,
which was rigging the land market and increasing prices. So, investors flooded
in; in fact, we had record levels of houses purchased by investors. Since then,
investment has been more sedate and an adequate number of new blocks have come
onto the market to meet demand. That is what the government has done.
