894. Hon Tom Helm to the Attorney General representing the Minister for the Environment:
I refer to question on notice number 924 of November 17 1999 -
(1) What grounds exist for establishing cause and effect between the browning of the leaf canopies, and signs of severe stress or death of the trees and the occurrence of an incident?
(2) In relation to the answer for part (7) can the Minister state why both the contamination of soil and vegetation damage are both environmentally undesirable?

The Minister Replied:
(1) The vegetation is downstream of a mine storage facility and there was been a minor breach in the wall of the storage facility. These dams are known to contain hypersaline water and other materials that may affect the health of the vegetation.
(2) Contamination of soil or vegetation damage, are environmentally undesirable as they may reduce the beneficial uses or environmental sustainability of the area of land involved.
