Defence industries—Market-sounding exercise
519. Hon Sophie McNeill to the minister representing
the Minister for Defence Industries:
I refer to the
Premier's recent announcement that this Labor government is seeking to build a
missile factory in the town of Collie.
(1) Does the state government intend to
fund this proposal or will it rely on federal funding?
(2) Has the government or any of its
representatives met with any weapons companies about this proposal and, if yes,
which companies?
(3) Has the government or its
representatives met with any United States officials or Department of War staff
regarding this proposal and, if yes, when did this occur?

I thank the member
for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me
by the Minister for Defence Industries.
(1) The Western Defence Forge is intended
to support Western Australia's contribution to national and global defence
manufacturing and associated industry supply chains. This initiative is a
market-sounding exercise.
(2)–(3) The role of Defence West and the Minister
for Defence Industries; Veterans is to grow the contribution of defence
industries to the economy of Western Australia. As a result of this role, the
government and its representatives regularly meet with defence industry
companies. This includes the market-sounding exercise.
