(a) [See tabled paper no].
(b) The Department of Health (DoH) monitors trends in notified gonorrhoea cases and collects additional information which is used to direct planning and evaluation of policies, programs and clinical practice (e.g. online education, campaigns, media, treatment and management guidelines).
The clinical management of the patients diagnosed with gonorrhoea, including contact tracing of partners, is the responsibility of the diagnosing clinician. Staff at the relevant Public Health Unit can assist with contact tracing when requested by the clinician.
DoH provides a comprehensive public health program that addresses target populations at risk of gonorrhoea, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including youth, Aboriginal communities, sex workers and men who have sex with men.
Education programs include targeted resources such as, 'Get the Facts' website and social marketing campaigns for young people, including specific campaigns targeting Aboriginal youth in regional areas. In addition to campaigns, DoH provides free educational resources which are available electronically by accessing DoH's website or are available as hardcopy brochures that can be ordered by health providers or health consumers. All of the DoH's STI resources have been modified to meet the needs of Aboriginal health consumers.
Regional sexual health teams, based in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Goldfields regions, have been providing comprehensive prevention and education programs for the past 10 years. The programs coordinate localised health promotion and community education activities.
DoH produces sexual health education materials for the WA school-based curriculum that are available through the website 'Growing and Developing Healthy Relationships'. The teaching materials are supported by in-service teacher training that seeks to recruit teachers from outside the metropolitan region and low socio-economic areas.
Free sexual health clinical services are funded and provided at Royal Perth Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Sexual and Reproductive Health WA (formerly Family Planning WA), Quarry Youth Service (formerly Family Planning WA), Magenta clinic for sex workers, and the WA AIDS Council's M-Clinic.
In addition to prevention and clinical services, DoH supports training and workforce development through the provision of clinical guidelines and free on-line and face-to-face training, which is available to Aboriginal health workers, doctors and nurses.
