❓ A parliamentary question regarding the WA Premier's response to flooding in the Great Southern region, alleging communication failures and unequal treatment compared to the Bunbury storms. The Premier refutes the claims, stating proper notification procedures were followed.

Immediately after the destructive Bunbury storms of 15 May, the Premier personally visited the south west and declared the event a natural disaster, paving the way for victims to access a range of relief fund options. I now ask - (1) Why did the Premier not visit the great southern immediately after the disastrous floods of 1 April and why did it take until 25 May for him to advise this house that it, too, had been declared a natural disaster area? (2) Why did the Premier or the Minister for Agriculture not advise great southern victims on 6 May, when the commonwealth advised his government, that floods qualified as a natural disaster? (3) Will the Premier give an assurance to other communities in regional Western Australia that they will not be forced to suffer weeks of anguish because of his government’s inept communication on this issue? (4) Finally, what arrangements does the Premier have in place in the great southern to advise victims of precisely what natural disaster relief is available and how to apply? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1) The member’s question is based on a false premise. It was the Minister for the South West who visited the Bunbury region. (2) As I stated to the house in my previous answer on this issue, the great southern region was formally notified through all local governments and government agencies in the region being informed. They were formally notified of the eligibility of this event in a letter issued by the Fire and Emergency Services Authority on 3 May 2005. (3) Not applicable. (4) The various responsible agencies, in particular the Department of Agriculture, in relation to the great southern floods are responsible for advising the community of the assistance measures available. The Department of Agriculture has guidelines and application packs available. A free-call line, 1800 198 231, has been established by the department to accept all inquiries from primary producers.
