I refer to the letter sent to the Minister by the chair of the WA Local Government Grants Commission on March 22 2018 and ask: (a) What
was the Minister’s response to the Grants Commission’s
concerns over the costs to local governments
to maintain roads damaged by heavy vehicles
associated with mining and grain hauling; (b) Has
the Department undertaken any research into the councils’ concerns; (c) What
was the result of the research; and (d) Has

(a) The Grants Commission’s letter was noted and I asked the Commission to continue to provide updates to me following their public hearings. The Government is committed to creating and supporting sustainable local governments, particularly in regional areas, and feedback about issues of importance is always welcome.
(b) A review of local government road costs is being undertaken by the Local Government Grants Commission, in addition to the annual road information data collected from local governments. This includes traffic count data for heavy vehicles on certain roads.
