A WA parliamentary question on notice addresses changes to tunnel plans for the South West Metropolitan Railway (SWMR), specifically concerning the Elanora Drive tunnel and potential replacements with boom-gate crossings. The Minister refutes the premise, stating the tunnel was never deleted and plans were made public in 2002.

The original alignment of the South West Metropolitan Railway had the alignment on the eastern side of Rockingham Hospital known as the ?Direct Route?. The SWMR Master Plan, April 2000 included consideration of two options for routes through the Rockingham City Centre involving the construction of either a long or short tunnel, neither of which had an impact on Elanora Drive. In the Supplementary Master Plan, August 2002, the original alignment described above was changed to provide for the railway within the Garden Island Highway reserve and then passing along the eastern side of Ennis Avenue. The railway passed under the intersection of Elanora Drive and Ennis Avenue in a railway tunnel structure. This tunnel was designed to pass under the existing Elanora Drive road carriageways, but the design has been changed to increase the length of the tunnel to now take into account the ultimate road width of Elanora Drive which has divided dual lane carriageways.

(a)-(f) The basis of this question assumes that there has been a deletion of a railway tunnel under Elanora Drive and its replacement by a level crossing. This is completely false and misleading and suggests that there is a lack of understanding of the original plans for the SWMR and for the current plans which were made public in August 2002.
