I refer to rail safety occurrences, and I ask: (a) what is the reason for the steep increase in category A and B rail safety occurrences from 2,680 in 2012-13 to 3,027 in 2013-14; (b) is this a reflection of agency infrastructure and inadequate maintenance; and (c) how many category A rail safety occurrences were recorded in 2013-14 for the Australind rail service?

(a) Category A Notifiable Occurrences increased as a result of the number of "Attempted or Suspected Suicide" classification incidents.
Category B Notifiable Occurrences increased mainly due to vandalism related incidents, track and civil infrastructure irregularities, a number of level crossing incidents and a number of signals passed at danger occurrences.
(b) There is no evidence to suggest that the increase of these occurrences is due to inadequate maintenance of the PTA's infrastructure.
(c)  There were two Category A Notifiable Occurrences recorded in the 2013-14 financial year for the Australind rail service, one "Attempted or Suspected Suicide" that occurred on 29 March 2014 and one level crossing incident that occurred 1 September 2013.
