ANIMAL WELFARE ACT - SECTION 19
I refer to the Animal Welfare Act. Given that in February when the minister addressed the Pastoralists and Graziers Association conference, he said that the act was under review and that he would give it his top priority, I ask - (1) Will the minister change section 19(3)(a), which refers to transporting an animal in a way that is likely to cause it harm? (2) Will the minister change section 19(3)(b), which refers to confining an animal in a way that is likely to cause it unnecessary harm? (3) The aforementioned sections relate to the live shipping industry and other farm practices, the loose way in which harm can be defined and what is unnecessary harm and what is harm. What will the minister change these sections to? (4) When will the minister finish the review, given that it is now four months since he said the words “top priority”? Hon KIM CHANCE
