BUY LOCAL POLICY - MID WEST CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
I refer to a report in The Geraldton Guardian of 10 October that the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry planned to meet with departmental heads in the hope of improving the Buy Local policy. (1) Has this meeting taken place, and, if so, what was the outcome; and, if not, when is a meeting scheduled? (2) Will the government extend its Buy Local policy in Geraldton, and, if not, why not; and, if so, what initiatives are planned, particularly for common-use arrangements, which in the past have prevented some regional departments from purchasing locally? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) If the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry wishes to meet with the Department of Treasury and Finance and the State Supply Commission, the relevant agency will arrange a meeting. (2) A review by the State Supply Commission of the regional purchasing aspects of the Buy Local policy is currently underway and is near completion. This review is examining initiatives to increase the amount of purchasing undertaken through regional suppliers, including in the mid-west. Notwithstanding the review, local procurement has already been significantly enhanced with the establishment of the Mid West Regional Buying Centre in Geraldton.
