FOREIGN BUYERS SURCHARGE
388. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Minister for Housing:
I have a supplementary question.
Given the minister's non-answer, how many jobs need to be lost and how
many billions of dollars of investment need to be lost from the housing and
construction sector before the government addresses the foreign investor
surcharge that is crippling investment in this state?
Ms R. Saffioti interjected.
The SPEAKER : Minister for
Transport, I call you to order for the first time.

I do not even really want to dignify
that question with an answer. Seriously, I don't.
Several members interjected.
Mr P.C. TINLEY : I cannot
believe that members opposite are all quoting some sort of convention here.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, please.
Mr P.C. TINLEY : They are
showing complete disregard for the standing orders and no understanding
whatsoever of the processes of this place. They treat it with utter contempt
like their born-to-rule attitude. They always bring to this place a presumption
that —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : I know it is
rather fiery but I want to hear what it is fiery about.
Mr P.C. TINLEY : What I really
want is some leadership to take responsibility for ruining the state's
budget; ruining the finances of this state; the job-killing eight and a half
years of the previous government and its eight and a half years of job-killing
policies. Do members opposite know what the housing industry says to us? They
are so happy we are in government. When I asked why that was, they said, ''Because
you're listening.'' I said, ''Oh, every government should
listen.'' They told us, ''That's not our experience of
the previous government.'' The previous government circled the wagons
and shut them out. Their little purple circle shut out all of the business
community, and what have we done? After governing for two years, we have
created 37 000 jobs and put $900 million into topping up the demand take-out
mechanism called Keystart; changing the parameters, creating even further
demand because we were listening to industry, because they came to us —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Carine, I call you to order for the third time. Member for Darling Range, I call
you to order for the first time.
Mr P.C. TINLEY : They came to
us and the door was open. We are ready to listen and respond.
