Will the minister please urgently inform the house of the current status of the whale stranding in Busselton? Dr J.M. EDWARDS
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the member for some notice of this question. Members may be aware that approximately 150 false killer whales are stranded west of Busselton. At this stage they are thought to be in three groups comprising two pods that are stranded on shore and one pod that is circling nearby in the ocean. The plan is to get the first pod off the land and into the ocean to join the pod currently circling in the ocean. Assuming that works, the second pod will be removed later today or tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, some strong north-westerly winds are coming in, which create some problems for the whales but perhaps, more particularly, for the volunteers, who are at some risk of suffering hypothermia. May I thank in anticipation, and for the work they have already done, the volunteers there? There is a call out for more volunteers. If members receive calls at their electorate offices, people can contact the Department of Conservation and Land Management office at Busselton. May I again thank all those people involved who will be working into the night to try to get those whales back out into the ocean?
