parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the live export industry,
in particular, the export of Australian cattle.
(1) Which eight
markets, as identified by Peter Metcalfe during the estimates hearings on 15
June 2016, is the Department of Agriculture and Food investigating for the
expansion of the live cattle export industry?
(2) Further to
the estimates hearings, will the parliamentary secretary please outline all
activities being undertaken to promote live exports to Vietnam?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) The
alternative markets referred to by Mr Metcalfe included both live export and
boxed beef markets. DAFWA is investigating the export of boxed beef exports to
China and South East Asian markets and the live export of feeder, slaughter and
breeding cattle to China and South East Asian markets.
(2) DAFWA has
focused on enabling WA businesses already engaged in the Vietnamese market
through investigations to better understand the market opportunities for beef
and live cattle in Vietnam. DAFWA assists WA companies to investigate business
models for the Vietnamese market, which may increase the value of WA products
into this market.
