PERTH PARKING LEVY
I refer to a comment in freedom of information material obtained from the Department of Transport about the department’s 20-year public transport master plan and the statement that the expansion of the Perth parking levy to include the whole metropolitan area, particularly major centres, would appear to be an equitable and reliable funding solution. Mr T.R. Buswell : You are in gaga land. Mr E.S. RIPPER : You should talk! I ask — (1) Will the Premier absolutely rule out any extension of the geographical area subject to the Perth parking levy while he is Premier? (2) Will the Premier absolutely rule out any further increase to the Perth parking levy while he is Premier? Mr C.J. BARNETT

(1)–(2) It would have been more appropriate to ask the Minister for Transport this question. Mr E.S. Ripper : You are the Premier. Mr C.J. BARNETT : Yes, I am the Premier. However, I am not aware of the detail of every little aspect of that document, but the government — Mrs M.H. Roberts : You ruled out demerit points for the people who speed by a little bit. So you are interested in these things. Mr C.J. BARNETT : Yes, the member might be interested, but I do not know the detail; so I will not proffer an answer. The parking levy serves a purpose. There may be some argument for extending it more widely, for a wider boundary around the CBD, but that is something that the government of the day will look at on its merits.
