JOHN CURTIN COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
(1) Does the government propose to turn the John Curtin College of the Arts, formerly John Curtin Senior High School, and my alma mater I might add, into a so-called academically selective school along the lines of the new Perth Modern School? (2) If so, when will this occur? (3) What will happen to the college’s specialist dance and drama students and specialist soccer students who cannot meet the academically selective criteria? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

(1)-(3) John Curtin currently offers specialist programs but it will not be a specialist academic school. However, it will be a specialist arts and performing arts school. Melville Senior High School will become a special academically selective school, as will South Fremantle Senior High School. I was keen to ensure that in that southern corridor there was something for everyone. South Fremantle Senior High School already has a reputation as a very good sports school. As part of this proposal, the sports program will be strengthened, in addition to the specialist soccer program and the development of other specialist sports programs. The soccer program at John Curtin College of the Arts will not be taking in any new students. However, students who already taking part in the program will be able to continue to participate in the program and complete their schooling. Certainly there will be a readjustment - Hon Simon O’Brien : In future will they go to South Fremantle? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : Yes, because not only the academic programs but also the specialist sports programs that are offered at that school will be strengthened.
