LAKE MARIGINIUP — GROUNDWATER EXTRACTION
I refer to the Department of Water’s report HG36, “Perth Shallow Groundwater Systems Investigation — Lake Mariginiup —Hydrogeological record series”. (1) How much progress has the Department of Water made to implement the recommendations proposed in this report? (2) Have private licensed and unlicensed groundwater extractors been advised of the potential effects of high concentrations of heavy metals in groundwater around Lake Mariginiup? (3) If yes to (2), how many groundwater extractors were advised, in what form, and over what time frame? (4) If no to (2), why not? Hon HELEN MORTON

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The following recommendations from HG36 have been implemented: ministerial criteria levels are now measured at bore MS10 when the lake is dry; groundwater levels are now measured at bore MGP-c when the ecological monitoring is undertaken; hydrochemical triggers and management actions are being developed and will be reported in the next review of the Gnangara groundwater areas allocation plan, scheduled for 2012—these will be implemented once resources required to fund a sampling and analysis program have been secured; and the reduction of private abstraction in the Mariginiup groundwater sub-area is ongoing. The Gnangara groundwater areas allocation plan and the Gnangara sustainability strategy are aiming to reduce licensed entitlements by around 18 per cent by 2013. To date, licensed entitlements at the Mariginiup groundwater sub-area have already been reduced by six per cent. (2) This report has been available on the Department of Water website since 20 July 2010. (3)–(4) See (2) above.
