GREENOUGH REGIONAL PRISON - STAFFING
What steps is the government taking to overcome the problem of insufficient staff at the Greenough Regional Prison? Hon JON FORD

AnswerView source ↗

I thank Hon Anthony Fels for some notice of this question. The Minister for Corrective Services has supplied the following answer. The Department of Corrective Services is currently addressing the problem of insufficient staff at Greenough Regional Prison in two key ways. Firstly, it is addressing the problem through the phased recruitment of prison staff as per the 2005 staffing review, which identified that five extra staff are required for Greenough. The positions are mainly for vocational support officers and specialist positions that require a trade qualification, which requires close management in a labour market in which the availability of skills is constrained. These positions, along with more general staff requirements, were advertised in The West Australian and the local Guardian Express newspaper on 23 June 2007. Secondly, there is a general increase in recruitment efforts for the prison service. A large recruitment campaign is currently underway and it is intended that the Greenough Regional Prison will fill some of its shortfall in staff from this process. Recent recruitment information sessions have been conducted at the prison with the intention of attracting staff.
